Hello, my name is Nils Carlén and I would like to tell you a bit about the project! I have used AC3D for some time and I think it is a truly wonderful program to work with. Maya, Blender3D and 3DSMax never really appealed to me and the interfaces were quite frustrating. The budget is a tight one where shelling out a couple of thousand dollars for software is not an option. Thanks to AC3D, purchasing 3D software was not a problem for the team. The learning curve compared to other large programs is unbeatable, without sacrificing quality and function.
The Apocalypse Online project was started with a couple of friends while studying in high school in Sweden. The original concept was all about open gang war, interactivity and anarchy, post- apocalypse in its grim, true nature.
The start was rough and slow but interest existed and I continued for a few months, mostly on my own. Then Brett Ellis joined the team as my assistant and co-project manager. After that, Apocalypse Online has been a walk in the rose garden, so to say, as things are really blossoming. The entire website has evolved from a rather desolate place to a large, active community with development occurring daily.
The game takes place in a near future where the moon has been destroyed after a propulsion experiment yields terrible results. Large chunks of rock have fallen upon the earth and cast it into what resembles a nuclear winter. With an ensuing fifty years of darkness and a heavily reduced population, a battle over the last remaining resources has grown into a fierce nuclear war.
Users play as one of four factions: Nomads, Raiders, Tech and Enclave. Each faction has its unique abilities, architecture, culture and storyline. The idea is to make a world that interacts with the player but at the same time is very challenging; where each user must spend hours collecting food and water to survive, and find warmth at night.
I have started teaching our members how to use AC3D with simple homemade tutorials. Safe to say, it has worked like a charm and will continue to do so. I hope that a lot of other young game developers realize that this is the most efficient choice for their project, and their budget.
