How about unchecking the "offset duplicates" box (File menu -> settings), duplicating your object and then mirroring the duplicate? That's the way I do it.

Just make sure that the 'seam' surface of your original is flat and lies on the plane defined by two axes - however even forgetting that is no capital sin: you just select two homologous vertices on either half after mirroring, and then snap the two halves together (snap objects by vertices).

Couldn't be easier :-)

P.S.: in particular if the result has to be smooth (as for instance when you're dealing with a face), once you're done it's also advisable to merge the two halves together and optimize the vertices, so that the surfaces across the seam become contiguous.
