You may have anti-alias switched on in the settings for the graphics card. That can cause problems with selection.

For the key-presses, they are case sensitive so check for caps-lock. Also the focusing settng may be different to the older version you had. You may want to switch on File->settings->advanced->set-focus-on-mouse-over-views.
