Federation F-1 Fighter
Okay, so it may seem nonsensical to have the United Federation of Planets (specifically Starfleet) to have airplanes, not to mention fighters. Well, perhaps an alien culture developed some sort of dampening field that will disable a vehicles flight systems (antigrav generators and aerodynamic buffer shields, for example). If that's the case, when aerial combat ensues, it would be necessary to have something that could actually FLY haha! Well, Here's a concept for a 25th century Starfleet fighter plane. It draws heavily on the F-22 and F-35, as well as the Northrop Grumman JSF concept model. It may seem to fit today's description of "advanced," but it'd probably look absurd in 2400. My logic: between the end of World War III and the time this was developed, there was no need to advance aerodynamics for planes, so therefore they had to go back 350 years to find a viable design. Crappy logic, but there you have it.

Re: Federation F-1 Fighter
I decided to make the plane this combats as well. It's a Terran Empire Fighter (I haven't figured out what registry to give it though) and it derives a large amount of inspiration from the German Horten Ho 229 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horten_Ho_229)
...okay, scratch that. It's practically identical to the Ho 229...

Looks more like a B-2 bomber

Re: Federation F-1 Fighter
Heh, it's funny that you should say that, because Jack Northrop derived his inspiration from the German flying wing aircraft captured by American forces during the Nazi withdrawal at the close of World War II. His first flying wing concept was the N-1M Jeep, which was succeeded by a number of experimental planes. Eventually, this all culminated in the design of the YB-49, a prototype flying wing bomber that competed with the YB-52 for a military contract. Unfortunately, this design was unsuccessful, despite its obvious innovation, because the technology of the era was not advanced enough to cope with the inherent instability of the tail-less design. The concept was placed on the back burner until the 80's when Northrop (now Northrop Grumman) produced the B-2 Second Generation Stealth Bomber.
Thus concludes our history lesson for today! Haha! Despite its obvious parallels to the American designs, this is more in line with the Ho 229, due mainly to its engine placement (being that they are so close to center) and the tail boom.

If you want inspiration for advanced aircraft designs, look no further than http://luft46.com/.

Re: Federation F-1 Fighter
I remember watching a History channel special on secret Nazi weapons projects. They were definitely far ahead of their time. Also, I looked up that movie on IMDB and from the quotes, it looks absolutely hillarious, I think I need to see it now!
