new release of ac3d?
Alright I'm sorry I know I have asked this before. But I would really like to get a time frame. I love using ac3d the user interface is great. The program is very easy to learn. So with that said can you please give me a time frame on when exactly we can expect to see ac3d with animation released?
Thanks |

you have to realize that animation is no small matter. an animation editor is a tricky program to write,
my bro and i are making one right now(personal use), and we've had to rewrite it 3 times due to lack of organization in the code. its hard to make it easy to uses, yet fast and powerful. with that in mind, you cant expect for Andy to slap a crap animation excuse into AC3D, it would be way out of place with the rest of ac3d.. For andy to add animtion into ac3d, will probly require him to rewrite most of the base fuctionalitys of the way ac3d handles your models, not to mention a huge interface change. if he did it wrong it could change ac3d for the worse(no pressure andy, lol), but judging by how well the rest of ac3d works together, i think we can expect a pretty smooth ac3d w/ animation. i do not know how far andy is with the animation, but asking him so slap a date on that kind of project is not very realistic. if he had a team of 20 that would be a different story. and please, forgive me if this reply sounds offensive, its not ment that way. also, andy, correct me if i am wrong about any of this. --Philip |

Am I the only one wishing he had a team of twenty?

Pffft. I'd settle for a team of two: just one other person to help me with integrating my AC3D projects into TW.

Geez livewire don't freak out on me man! Just asking a simple question about software I love using. I am fully aware of how long it takes. Just trying to get an estimate. So anyone?

If you WERE aware of "what it takes", you'd know not to press Andy for an estimate.
It is a fact of life in software that the coders often have NO IDEA how long it will take to get anything done; estimates are often off by months or years. And by publicly putting an 'estimate' out there, it quickly becomes a 'promise' and then their feet are held to the fire for "lying about it". We ALL want it today. But then, we all want to hit the lottery and retire. There IS no estimate. That's your answer, I'm afraid.

Guys sound a bit grumpy. Don't see how being confrontational is going to help out any. Release estimates are hard, yes. It might be possible to give a time period in which animation definitely will *not* be available, though.

Don't mind Stiglr's tone - he's just a gruff old man. *nudges Stiggie*
His point is valid though - as a programmer myself I can tell you that. The number of times I've been asked to estimate how long something takes by my boss and have simply given him a number to shut him up so I could get cracking is huge. But also, it is possible to make a qualified guess at how long it will take. If you then multiply that guess by two and give that number, your boss' first response will likely be a twinge of pain. Then he will try to get you to lower the estimate. Don't let him. Odds are you'll find yourself pulling three all-nighters in a row followed by a working weekend because he promised a customer it would 'definately be done by monday', even when you said "I'd need a month or so." The same goes for game or software development for end users. Give them an estimate of 'some time next year' to chew on, then surprise them with coming through in two months. That way, they'll settle down for the wait at first, and then when you come ythrough ahead of time, you'll be lauded as a hero.
