Thanks. I write graphics engines and simulations for games and film for a living, so I get a lot of practice.

For others, including AC3D, you just UV map the object, and then paint the weights in a grayscale image like any other texture. If you save your template with the "Copy image to clipboard" feature in the texture coordinate editor, it'll give you something to paint over, and then it's not too difficult. You don't need to be terribly precise - I just airbrush over the whole region in PhotoPaint and blur to keep it smooth. Lightwave, Maya and SoftImage all use weight maps, as do some other high-end tools. Here's a Lightwave tutorial to give you some idea how they do it: http://www.geocities.com/rgkovach/wp_tut.htm And another one for Max: http://mxmgallery.maxwellrender.com/wmap_en_vr.pdf In my case, I'm targetting my companies' game engine, which is it's own custom renderer. POV-Ray also supports weight maps, although AFAIK only for materials. POV doesn't call them weight maps, it calls them "image_pattern" instead, but it's the exact same concept... you can use a grayscale image to smoothly blend between two textures. |

Thanks lisa for all the infos and the video (the anim is really cool and your capture is ok).
Painting over the 2D wireframe ... I should have guess ![]() BTW : I just saw on your website that you had been involved into a game that I have in my PS2 games collection (Splashdown). This game was a great fun even if it was already too hard for me in the middle (I'm not what we can call an "hardcore gamer" as you can see ;o))

I think the free version promotion ended a few months ago, but they run these kind of promotions periodically if you watch for them. (Nice thing is, the free version is still eligible for reduced-cost upgrade to the current version.) I don't think they have anything free right now, though.
If you're looking specifically for something free, you could try Daz Studio instead: http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/software/studio/-/? |

![]() Tuning is always so tricky. No matter what you do, it's always too hard for some people and too easy for others. <sigh> The magazines really blast you when your game is too "short", and magazine reviewers are all pro players, which is why I think there is a bad tendency for everyone to tune their games too hard. Personally, my belief is that the best approach is to make the main missions easier then make "side quests" that are optional but quite tricky, although that approach is certainly easier to implement in some genres than it is in others. |
