To create a torus
Hi All,
Just joined and been working my way throu the manual, working out how and what things do. Been trying to get the torus part as shown in the manual to work, but for some reason I do not end up with anything that is show in the manual, are there some bits missing or am I just reading it wrong. what I end up with is, a round ball that has a drak spot top and bottom. So does anyone have a step by step guide that they know will work? Cheers HowDo. |

Re: To create a torus
I think that you might have choosen the wrong axis to revolve around.
Draw a circle/ellipse in the front view. With your circle still selected in object mode, go to object / revolve. Choose the following parameters : degres = 360 axis = Y segments = 12 offset = 0.0 then push the revolve button. HTH.

That's what I'm guessing, too.
I did some screen grabs to walk you through it: http://independentdeveloper.com/arch...o_make_a_torus |

Re: To create a torus
Thanks Lisa for your walk through, Now I see where I was going wrong, was putting the circle dead center which does not make a torus, move it off center and all is well.
Another question I am working on making a model that is like a wooden puzzle and it has pieces cut to make a shape of a tree. Now I have worked out how to make the over all object and to cut out the middle part by drawing along the lines of the backdrop picture which makes the first object cut out. this is when I get stuck, I have now have a hole in the middle how do you pick the edges of the parts that are left to make the cut away object so that it is a seamless match. http://www.freepuzzleplans.com/ link drawings i am using. |

Re: To create a torus
Glad to be of help!
As far as your puzzle piece, there's a couple of ways to make the surface. For both methods, the first thing you want to do is switch to vertex mode. The method I prefer is "Create Ordered Surface" because it requires no clean-up. Select the vertices around the edge of your hole in counter-clockwise order. It's important to select them in this order, or you will get junk. After you have selected your vertices, click Vertex > Create Ordered Surface, or just press Control+Shift+S on the keyboard. The other way to do it is with "Create 2D Mesh". With create mesh, it doesn't matter what order you select the vertices in. Just highlight all of them, and then click Vertex > Create 2D Mesh > Front (or whatever view makes sense for your arrangement of points). This will create a new surface from your vertices. The only downside to this method is that if your shape is concave, it may create some extra surfaces. Just switch to surface mode, highlight the extra surfaces and delete them to get the shape you want. I don't like this method as well because I don't like the clean-up, but sometimes if I'm working with a very large number of vertices it's a bit faster. |
