Making car textures
Hi
Does anyone know how to make car textures from scratch like in Andy's tutorial, it seems to be a good idea to make the model from the texture.I have been looking for suitable car photos from the net with no luck. JimB |

Anyone?
It's always the same somebody shows how to do something using a pre prepared bitmap, what would be nice is a tutorial on how to make the bitmap in the first place. JimB |

If you have the model and are doing the texture afterwards, I would suggest getting a screenshot of the orthographic views of your model and then drawing on top of them with Photoshop or the GIMP. Then apply the texture you just made.
If you're just trying to make a texture with no specific applicaiton in mind yet, then try looking in back-issues of "Game Developer Magazine" (or possibly online at www.gamasutra.com). They had a nice series on creating material textures a few months back. BTW: remember to specify your texture with dimensions that are powers of 2 (i.e., 64, 128, 256) on each side in order to have maximum compatibility without image distortion. Have fun, -- Jeff |

Re: Making car textures
I'm doing a T-45 from color 3-views that i scanned. I'm not ready to paint the bird yet. However, when its done, I will use the model to generate a template and then paint it with Gimp.
Or, I could just use the scanned images I have and create a skin from them. However the scans are not the paint scheme I want. I particularly like the ability in AC3D to scale and center the background images. That way all my backgrounds are to scale and centered correctly. One problem is that the program doesn't remember your backgrounds or their scale/offset when you close it and re-open it again. So, I had to go and put in a few calibration objects to help me re-align the images when I start a new session. I will use a 256x256 texture image for skinning. later Patrick |
