Unhappy Can I change the near clipping plane in the viewports?

Hi, when I try too zoom in on something in the front view for example, at some point the geometry gets clipped. Can I change this? I really hope I can because it is impossible to work on small details.

When I select the geometry and hit F, I do see it but the moment I try to zoom out or in just a tiny bit, everything gets clipped again. This is really not a practical way of working. Please help

I would normally respond that you need to recenter the view by focusing on something in the area you are working on by pressing 'f' but it appears you are already doing that

You can indeed change the OpenGL near and far values which are used for clipping but you really need to understand what they mean before you change them. There are many OpenGL resources where you should be able to find help on these values.

In the preferences file ac3dprefs8.txt (windows) or .ac3dprefs (Mac/Linux), look for these:

ogl_near 0.050000
ogl_far 1000000.000000

Also - you could try switching to walk-mode (press '2' in the 3d window) and navigate around using that, instead of spinning/zooming.

Hi! A few years later, but I'd still like to thank you for your reply!

I am trying to adjust the ogl numbers but I cant see many resources that would state that clearly.

I dont have a problem with the clipping in the 3D view, but rather in the ortho views, (Front, Side etc.)

Changing those numbers doesnt seem to make any difference.

I hope you are well

More specifically, if I use the F button to focus on a small object, zooming in a bit or out a bit immediately clips the rest. It seems as if the focus range is very very small. Again, this is only in the not 3D views.

In the view windows, the limit is the floating point accuracy. It should be good for seven decimal places, although it will allow you to zoom further that it probably should (currently no limit).

How small are you working?

I recorded a video to show the issue.

I have a greeble which is about 15m tall.

I can zoom in and out without any issues.

I then copy the greeble, and make it much smaller, to around 0.5m

I then select a vertex on the smaller greeble in one of the side views (I do it in the Top view) and hit "F" on the keyboard (this happens at 00:38 of the video).

now if I try to zoom in or out, even a very small change in the zoom clips the geometry.

Thanks for the excellent video.

I've been able to duplicate the problem. I'll let you know what I can find out.

Awesome, thank you very much!

One more thing since I'm here. I believe you created the plugin to export for X-Plane, correct?

It would be great if we could disable writing the BLEND GLASS into the objs, as that is only needed for objects that only have glass.

Right now I didn't find a way to remove it so we have to do it manually, otherwise the X-Plane log shows a lot of messages that the plane is using objects with BLEND GLASS assigned to a non glass object.

Cheers
