Default Vertices exploding on export?

I am using AC3D 8.6.11 with the newest X-Plane plugin, and it seems that when I export to OBJ8 format, the vertices get "exploded" (like unwelded), resulting in duplicate vertices at each surface intersection.
For instance, if I create a simple cube in AC3D (6 surfaces, 8 vertices) and export it to OBJ8, I get 24 vertices, 3 at each corner of the cube. Also, the quad meshes are getting triangulated.
Is this just the way the exporter works? Am I missing an export setting or other configuration parameter? It seems like the OBJ8 file should have a point count of 8 for the cube.
Thanks!
