ac3d runs slower on my new i7 than old i5
the same version of ac3d, exact same plugins, runs way slower in my new i7 than my 2 year old i5. the reason i upgraded my pc was for 3D work, i mostly use ac3d.
my old computer is gateway, i5, 3.0 ghz, 8 gb memory, got it 2 years ago. my new computer is a gateway i7, 3.4 ghz, 10 gb memory, i just got it last week. both running windows 7, both using the exact same ac3d version, ac3d runs much slower on the i7, surely it should be faster. just to test, i have both computers on at the same time (i have two monitors) if i open up the same complex object in both computers, and in the lower right viewer box rotate the object, the i7 is way slow, almost slide show like, and the i5 is like 50 times faster. i opened the task manager and i see that when the object is rotating the i5 is using 45-50 percent CPU usage, and the i7 shows CPU usage is 10-12 percent. i asked gatway tech support is there anyway i can find out the real speed of the CPU, i know that its supposed to be 3.4 ghz but is it really working that speed, and they were of no help, they said to update VGA driver. i will try that but i dont see what VGA driver has to do with this? when i open device manager and click on display adapters and update drivers it says "dont need to update drivers, they are up to date." Re: ac3d runs slower on my new i7 than old i5
Check that AC3D is using your graphics card - look at the text that pops up in the black window. If you can't read it fast enough, change the console setting in advanced preferences so that the window stays open.
You could also check the screen depth. You don't say which version of AC3D you are using - 6.x may have speed problems on newer machine. AC3D 7 should be better. |

Re: ac3d runs slower on my new i7 than old i5
(edit) andy you posted your reply same time as i posted this, i will check what you describe and post back
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i just updated VGA driver, i downloaded the intel one at the bottom of this list, the most recent date: 02/21/2013. http://support.gateway.com/us/en/pro...1&modelId=4263 the list has many different companies but since when clicking on device manager, display devices, it says intel HD graphics 4000 so i downloaded the most recent intel driver on that list. installed, restarted computer and the i7 is still way slower than the i5. i upgraded my computer to i7 3.4 ghz, 10 gb memory for more efficient 3D work, if i cant figure this out i will have to work on my older pc and maybe return or exchange this. any ideas? did i read somewhere that a company was selling pcs that supposedly had i7s but it was really a different CPU? if so how can i check? |

andy, yes the black screen only lasts a split second, too fast to see, but im seeing no tabs for "console setting", or "advanced preferences" please tell me where this is

The text you want will be at the top so you'll need to scroll up.
Look for the line mentioning OpenGL. |

Re: ac3d runs slower on my new i7 than old i5
AC3D is using the Intel 4000 graphics. If you have a graphics card installed, it's not using that. I know that some PCs can switch between a built in graphics processor and a full graphics card when needed. Perhaps you can switch off this option and force it to use your more powerful card? from a quick google on Gateway i7, you may have an ATI Mobility RADEON HD 5750?

when i right click my computer, device manager, display adapter, it says intel 4000. is that enough to mean that it isnt tthe radion? how do i make the comptuer use it? |
