Great figure model tut
If you want to try your hand at figure modeling, there's a great tut for doing that here. http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials...c/joanmenu.asp
It's kinda one of those cartoonish type characters, but still it walks you through step by step. It's pretty much geared toward using 3D Max and AC3D doesn't have the features that Max does, but you can do work-a-rounds to achieve the same results. Here's a progress photo of the one I'm currently working on. As an added note, I just learned that if you create your model using quads instead of triangles, you'll have much better results when you go to subdivide and smooth. |

how do you effectively CUT in AC3d I understand everything that's going on with some exceptions of jargon. Like what exactly is a quad ?

Re: Great figure model tut
To answer your question, A quad is a 4 corner surface that's not triangulated. Like a box.
To accomplish the "cut" effect, you have to select all the surfaces that you want to "cut" then divide once. That will divide each surface into quarters instead of in half. You then have to combine the 2 surfaces on each side leaving one single line of division, then delete the leftover vertices. It's much more time consuming, but what-a-ya gonna do. |

Hmm, I guess I was headed in the right direction but I stopped and undid everything in fear that my model would be days of hard work all done wrong. ops: Well I guess the next thing to do is beg andy for the addition of the tool I see something like that being very valuable.

Here's a progress shot of what I'm working on now. It's not easy trying to bend the arms and make the joints look right.
She's going to be holding some kind of huge funky weapon. *hope my bandwidth holds out* |

WOW!
If you run out of space, let me know and I'll host the images. I'm looking forward to adding this model to the gallery! Andy |

Re: Great figure model tut
I started on it and stopped at the shin, it was coming along well until I ran into the knife tool parts. So I stopped and search for one that I could do without using a knife tool.
http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/...ing/index.html Going to try this one even though it doesn't go into the same depth as the one woody posted I can jump back in on woody's tutorial after I get the body done for the clothing and accessories I think. |

Re: Great figure model tut
Hi guys !
this is my first attempt with the characters in AC3D.Thanks for the great tutorial. Still playing with it,Woody was right, ewerything is possible. And I got question:when i construct character face with stitching poly`s to nearsnap then merge ewerything but sometimes the direction of the patches is different, when exported as object files sometimes there is empty space in the model.Or maybee I should go thru tut again ?Thanks

Re: Great figure model tut
Great stuff!
For missing surfaces - make sure the normals all face the same way. Select all the surfaces ad set to single sided ('1S' on control panel). Any surfaces that are the wrong way around will show up from the opposite side only. Use Surface->flip-normal to flip it. When making poly objects by clicking, click in an anti-clockwise direction, then the surface will face you in the view. Andy |
